The Shipwrecked Story

Legend has it that many centuries ago, a ship was lost at sea off the beautiful southern pacific coast of Costa Rica. What remained of that ship became a topic of legends and local folklore. In 2022, two adventure seekers learned of this legendary ship and reclaimed the land to restore the ship to its original greatness. Now that the ship has been rebuilt, the owners have opened the ship to tourists so that they can experience the beautiful playground that is the Shipwrecked Hostel and explore the natural wonders of Costa Rica.

Our Shipwrecked Hostel is only the beginning of your Costa Rican adventure. Meet other travelers from around the world, explore the vast jungle, play in the many local waterfalls, surf at our picturesque beaches, and enjoy the local nightlife.

Meet The Owners

A love story meets business adventure.

Sander and Cristina met in Uvita, Costa Rica a few years after they both decided to make Uvita their long term home.

Sander was born in Bali but spent his youth in Holland before coming to Costa Rica with his parents to build and run a retreat center and hotel in the mountains.

Cristina was born in Portland, Oregon and spent most of her life there. When she wasn’t teaching children, planning large events, or running her massage therapy business, she was backpacking Central America and volunteering in hostels.

When Sander and Cristina fell in love, they used their differences to become a dynamic and unstoppable team. Sander stumbled upon a property for sale in Central Uvita and instantly the two conspired and inspired one another to begin the dreaming process. Cristina imagined a storyline that could give people an entire experience in an adult wonderland.

As quickly as Cristina could dream up this grandiose plan, Sander could begin putting it into reality. Within two weeks they had signed the purchase agreement, designed Shipwrecked Hostel, and began the journey. 5 months later and they were open. Sometimes the planets align and things move faster than ever imaginable.

Shipwrecked Hostel offers many different kinds of experiences and is a platform for personal growth and life long memories all while being surrounded by the most breathtaking beauty.

“Our experience with the Shipwrecked Hostel was just amazing. The kitchen is super well equiped and everything in the Hostel is from high quality (there is even have a rice cooker) beds are super comfortable and the outdoor area is just beautiful. The platform on the roof is perfekt for playing games, doing Yoga or workout. Everything is clean all the time and it was our best shower in all the jurney. You have a great view form everywhere outside. The owners are super friendly, helpful and wellcoming. They really care about you and have many tips for adventures in the area. We Are really thankfull und will defenitly come back! 😊”
